Dressage instructor and clinician Mary Werning began riding in her early
childhood in multiple disciplines (including hunter-jumper, western pleasure and saddleseat). In the early 1970's,
she found dressage and today is a well known and much respected trainer, clinician, instructor and competitor.
While she started with the German, French and Hungarian dressage methods, she soon became fascinated with the methodology
of Karl Mikolka from the Spanish Riding School. She started riding with Karl in 1988 and is one of a select number of his
certified instructors in the U.S. While riding with Karl, Mary was given the opportunity to ride many types of horses......from
young and inexperienced.....to those more advanced in training.
Mary's philisophies are much like
Karl's. She has a willingness to teach anyone who sincerely wants to learn to become a better trainer, rider and
horseman. She has a tremendous love and respect for horses. That love as well as her intuitive skills guide her
in her lessons and training sessions. Her primary goals for the horse are to create a relaxed and well schooled
horse.....with soundness and proper conditioning being key to developing an athlete that is light on the aids and beautiful
to ride and watch. When it comes to the rider, Mary's emphasis is teaching the proper aids and what to expect
from them. Her goal for the rider is to create a confident, thinking, elegant and effective rider that has great feel
for the horse.....both a mental and physical connection.

Mary has had many special horses in her life. Mint Julep was very successful
through I-1 and is featured with Mary on Karl Mikolka's video "Thirty Days to a Better Seat". As Mint
Julep aged, Mary found a young stallion in Poland named Grand As. With Karl's guidance, Grand As quickly went up
the levels. He was trained through Grand Prix, with piaffe and passage being his specialty. Grand As was shown
very competitively throughout the Southeast and was ready to compete at I - 2 when an injury sidelined him.
Mary is preparing to compete one of his daughters in the near future.
Mary's quiet and patient demeanor make
her an excellent instructor for riders of all levels. The information gained from her clinics is priceless!
Please call for upcoming clinics and additional information.
